It is extremely important to note that the cast majority of Southeast Asians Muslims are moderate which shields the region from extremism. Singapore feels vulnerable because its strategic alignment with the US, the many US facilities in the island republic. Its small size and high population density and its close proximity to other Muslim countries from the clandestine where terrorist cell could potentiallu operate against Singapore. The fact that the Singapore government sees the security measures as being necessary indicates the very strong concern that Singapore remains a prime al-Qaeda target on account of its close relations with the US.

However the discovery of a clandestine network has shocked Singapore, known for being a haven for stability and put the spotlight on the ethnic diversities in the largely ethnic Chinese city-state with significant Malay Muslim and Indian communities
Until recently I m being a Muslim never fully realized how fundamentally the world has changed since September 11. All Muslims alike now held collectively responsible by many non-Muslim for the Sins of a lunatic fringe and are now stereotype as zealots because of their faith. Collections of stories that follows is definitive but it accurately reflects the mood and spirit the of Muslim in Singapore: angry, yes but also hurt and sad and proud, struggling to maintain an identity in the face of globalizations and bravely struggling in ways both big and small to prevent their faith from being hijacked by hate.
Besides the people who were affected, also I might add that Singapore economy was crippled when the attack directly affected the US. Singapore, which has strongly support the American anti-terrorist attacks, enjoys a close relationship with the US even before the September 11.

Nevertheless, in the wake of September 11, the issues must be faced, not only as we debate how much of our own freedom we are willing to sacrifice for our own securities as well as the well being of others
